Praise Your Child’s Effort

When you’re reading with your child, remember: they need to know that you value their efforts. Children learn to read over time, with lots of practice and support from parents and teachers.

Here are some ways you can show your child that you have confidence in their ability to learn:

  • Encourage your child to read on their own!
  • Be aware of your child’s reading level, and use that information in a positive way. Choose books and activities that are not too hard to discourage them, going back and forth between easy, fun material and slightly challenging material that will help your child improve their skills.
  • Be patient and flexible in your efforts to help your child.
  • Show your child that you see them as a growing reader, and praise their efforts to learn.
