BLACHLY SCHOOL DISTRICT NEWSLETTER - MARCH 2010

ASHLAND FIELD TRIP:
Each spring, Mrs. Brown arranges for all eligible Junior and Senior students to attend several plays at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival—one of which is a Shakespearian play.  This is generally a two day trip with lodging and meals involved as well as the plays.  Students raise funds, personally contribute toward their expenses, the school budgets for a portion of the expenses and individuals/businesses have opportunity to contribute to this enriching experience for students.  Should you wish to contribute, please contact Mrs. Brown or the district office. (541-925-3262)

BASKETBALL:
Basketball season has concluded for middle school boys, high school girls and high school boys.  The high school girls team extended their season into the first round of post-season play.  Congratulations, girls!
Middle school girls basketball season is underway and will conclude with a home game on March 17th.  To view their entire schedule, go to www.blachly.k12.or.us and follow the sports link.

WINTER SPORTS AWARDS:
On Thursday, February 25th the Booster Club will host the annual winter sports awards and dessert.  Following the dessert, the faculty and parents will challenge the senior class to a game of basketball.

SPRING SPORTS:
High school track team members will begin practicing the first week of March for their initial meet at McKenzie High School on April 2nd.  The team is coached by Paige Wynn.
Middle school track practice will begin later in the month and be coached by Scott Steinhauer.
Arrangements are being made for students interested in playing baseball to co-op with Crow High School.  Contact Athletic Director, Tony Wynn for more information.

STUDENTS RAISE FUNDS FOR…
Leukemia Lymphoma Society:  Under the supervision of teacher Kara Bechdolt, the middle school grades are hosting two fundraisers for the Leukemia Lymphoma Society.  The first is a penny drive that will run continuously until March 11th.  Support the sixth/seventh graders by donating pennies/change in Mrs. Hargett’s classroom.  Support the eighth grade by bringing your change to their jar in Mrs. Kara’s room.
The second fundraiser is an official “hat day”, where students and staff may purchase the privilege of wearing a hat at school for the day on March 2nd.  The cost of this event is $2.00 per hat.  Purchase your stamp (hat validation) from Mrs. Kara on hat day.
8th Grade Field Trip:  To raise funds for their spring overnight field trip, the eighth grade class has canvassed the valley for returnable bottles and cans.  This field trip has a historic/geography emphasis.  This is another opportunity for businesses/individuals to donate funds for student enrichment.

(Fundraising, continued)
Junior Class:  As they earn funds for next year’s senior sneak, the junior class is raffling an overnight stay and dinner for two at the Red Lion.  See a member of the Junior class to purchase raffle tickets--$1.00 each.

CENSUS:
The census bureau has requested to use space in the school for housing census materials and trainings.  They are required to have materials available to individuals who do not receive census documents at their residence and also need a place to hold trainings for those interested in working for the census bureau.  Sample tests and further information are available at the district office.

COMPUTER GIVE AWAY:
The district was successful in donating twenty-seven computer work stations to families at a recent computer give-away.  Thanks Kelly Goodwin for all your hard work to help make technology available to all of us!

 DISTRICT BUDGET:
Each spring the Blachly School Board seeks to fill vacancies on the Budget Committee.  The Budget Committee reviews the budget that the Superintendent recommends for the upcoming year.  If you have strengths and interest in fiscal matters, you may contact a school board member or the district office for more information.

BOOSTER CLUB AUCTION:
The Triangle Lake Booster Club is an active and significant part of funding for all sports at Triangle Lake Schools.  Their vast investment of time and energy brings about the Booster Club Auction each year the first Sunday in May.  At this event donated items are auctioned, and a Barbequed Chicken dinner is served, with all proceeds benefitting Triangle Lake School sports and scholarships.  To become involved, contact the school.

HEAD FOOTBALL COACH:
Triangle Lake Schools is seeking a head varsity football coach for the upcoming 2010 football season.  Thanks to John Luther for his investment as head coach for the past three seasons.

EXPANDED OPTIONS:
Parents of sophomore and junior students have received notification of college course opportunities next year through Expanded Options.  The school offers up to eighteen credit hours to be divided between interested juniors and seniors each school year.  Interested students should contact LeAnne Raze prior to April 13th.
